Islington (2020)

About the route

We began this route at St Luke’s Community Centre, a community hub in South Islington. St Luke’s helped to promote the event, providing it with a stronger channel to the local community.

This route presented a number of challenges. The data we could obtain on this area was somewhat different to other boroughs – for instance, it was not possible to obtain data about people’s objections (or support) for applications. Another issue was the sheer amount of development that could be detected by the Datasniffer. This lead to changing what could be detected via the Datasniffer even further, eliminating the category that could detect all London Development Database entries. The distance between key points of interest, such as the Community Centre and the Canal – which was particularly popular with the bats. We eventually decided for a longer route.

We had planned a discussion at Graham Street Park, but unfortunately the park was shut 15 minutes after we began speaking – something which hadn’t happened on our scouting trips. So we had a concluding chat outside the park gates.
