Brixton (2020)
About the route
The walk started at Remakery, a co-operative workshop dedicated to the re-use of surplus materials. Promoting the event with Remakery gave us a connection to the local community, and also to a hub of DIY and making practices. The route for this walk went through numerous changes over many visits to the area. A major consideration was sequencing the route to create a pattern of experiencing bats and development, without being overwhelmed by either. Like other routes, we wanted to end it in an area where bats were likely to be present – in this case, Elam Street Open Space was a very dark and green area which pipistrelles often frequented. Bats often appeared in unexpected spaces on this route – for instance, we found several outside Newark House. But the need to keep the route reasonably short, and the desire to keep it roughly circular, limited exploration a little.
We’d considered having the concluding discussion outside Remakery in its Garden, but in the end we found a comfortable spot to sit down outside Elam Street Open Space.
