Bethnal Green (2019)
About the route
This area was well known to me due to my long standing working with Common House, a social centre run by a consortium of activist groups. An early version of this walk was run for the Common Ground festival run by Common House, Teesdale and Hollybush Tenants and Residents Association, and Phytology, who run Bethnal Green Nature Reserve and operate a public programme exploring the ecological and social complexities of the urban landscape.
The walk began at Middleton Green before taking a dive into some nearby streets, and looping back to explore the park. This was a gesture designed to confound the expectation that bat walks explored parks as their principle site, allowing us to look more carefully through the urban landscape. After exploring the streets and the green, we entered Bethnal Green Nature Reserve for a careful wander. A post-walk discussion was then held in Common House.
